I’ve never had a cavity.
I can’t really give myself credit for this, however. For one, I’ve read that dental health is part genetic. And, two, my parents worked really hard to ensure my siblings and I took proper care of our teeth during our childhoods.
To this day, I still enjoy a good professional dental cleaning, and I love brushing my teeth.
With the holidays coming up, it’s likely all of us–and, perhaps, especially our children–will encounter the stereotypical dental villains in full force.
Whether it be candy from trick or treating or a fall festival at church (hopefully some type of organic suckers 😉 ), pumpkin pies at Thanksgiving or the plethora of sweets available during the Christmas season, it takes some extra diligence to maintain good dental health during the holidays.
Without further ado, check out my top 5 tips for how to maintain good dental health during the holidays:
1. Brush frequently.
I know, I know. This one’s a no-brainer, right? But it’s crucial. The American Dental Association recommends brushing your teeth at least twice a day (source). Most Americans brush in the morning and at night. I found it interesting that, while living in Costa Rica, I observed that many Latinos actually brush after lunch as well. But, really, that makes a lot of sense!
If your children do eat candy or sweets more frequently during the holidays, be sure to add in some extra brushing sessions!
2. Bring on the healthy fats.
Remember the low-fat diet crazy? Well, it’s over. More and more people are coming to realize that healthy fats play a huge role in our overall well-being.
Coconut oil is an excellent fat to add to your daily diet. And some people even claim that a process called oil pulling can reverse cavities and completely transform your entire dental health!
3. Schedule regular dental exams–with a dentist you feel comfortable with.
Because I’ve never had a cavity, all of my memories of going to the dentist are fond. I know this is not the case with everyone.
For this reason, I think it’s key to find a dentist with whom you feel comfortable!
There are many regular dental procedures today that you may not agree with. Get recommendations from friends and call to inquire whether or not they will balk (or even still see you) if you refuse X-rays, fluoride treatments, etc.
Check out the Holistic Dental Association directory of dentists to get you started.
4. Use a good, safe toothpaste.
When we first started our transition to natural living, I was apprehensive about changing toothpastes. Would a natural brand truly get our teeth clean? And weren’t natural toothpastes super expensive?
But when I learned about the potential dangers of fluoride, I knew we absolutely had to look into switching to a more natural alternative.
A year ago this month, we gave Earthpaste a try for the first time. To say we fell in love with this toothpaste would be an understatement! I was a little apprehensive at first because I had heard that it didn’t foam. Would it feel weird in my mouth? And would my husband even try it?
I was pleasantly surprised that it does not feel weird at all. Yes, it is different. Yes, it does take a little time to get used to it, but it didn’t take nearly as long as I thought it would.
And shocker or all shockers: My husband tried it and decided he loved it as well! Now neither of us want to touch any other toothpaste. Unlike me, my husband has always had poor dental health. His dentist was pleasantly surprised that he had NO cavities at his last visit!
My husband and I prefer the peppermint flavor, and our little girls love the lemon twist!
I believe Earthpaste is the safest toothpaste on the market today. Most brands of toothpaste contain foaming agents like SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate), and chemicals like titanium dioxide to make the paste bright white. Not Earthpaste. It isn’t just safe to swallow – each ingredient in Earthpaste has been used to support healthy systems.
The ingredients are simple:
Food Grade Redmond Clay®
Redmond Real Salt®
Tea Tree Oil
