Do you have a mentor? I personally believe having good mentors in your life is vital. This post gives three mentors you need in your life!
While I revel in learning from reading, in recent years I’ve enjoyed learning through real-life mentors.
There is nothing wrong with asking a mentor to help you. Having help matters! Wherever you are in your life, there are plenty of moments where you don’t want to be held back by uncertainty – and the personalized help of an expert enables you to make better decisions.
I see surrounding yourself with mentors as a must!
The following are three mentors that I believe are important to have in your life.
3 Mentors You Need in Your Life
1. Homemaking/Motherhood Mentor
I named this blog The Humbled Homemaker because when I first became a homemaker I felt like I had absolutely no clue what I was doing. It got even worse once I threw motherhood into the mix!
When I was buried in the pit of homemaking and motherhood despair, my friend–and now mentor–Holly tossed me a life raft.
I took Holly’s home management class, and she then began helping me work through learning how to manage my home inside of my home.
While helping me in my home, Holly has given me invaluable advice on how to mother my girls. I don’t think any of us are born knowing how to manage a home and to mother, and having someone more seasoned walk with me through these areas has been a blessing.
In addition, Holly has given me much spiritual encouragement as well. She and I have weekly phone chats and will occasionally meet for breakfast or coffee as well. Sometimes we also get together with our husbands.
2. Business Mentor
This type of mentor will probably not apply to all of you, but if you have any aspirations of becoming a work-at-home mom or are already a working mom to some degree, you might want to seek out a business mentor who is a few steps ahead of you.
I just started meeting with a blogging/business mentor, and I absolutely love it so far! She has been blogging for ten years (while I’ve only been blogging for four), and she and I have a lot in common. She is also a mom of three, and she has published several books.
We do not live in the same state, so we are meeting via Skype. We are currently meeting once per month.
3. Long-Term Planning Mentor
Insurance, retirement, investments: These words might as well be part of a foreign language because I definitely have no idea what to do about them on my own!
Enter: long-term planning mentors!
Different people have taken on this mentor position in our lives over the course of our marriage.
A few weeks ago, I told you about the Financial Peace teacher who spent time poring over our budget with us, when we could barely make ends meet.
We have also been meeting regularly with a financial planner who is helping us make decisions about investments and retirement.
One of the first long-term planning mentors we sought out in our newlywed days was a good insurance agent. A good insurance agent, like those at State Farm, gives you the confidence you need of knowing that someone has your back in the event of an emergency.
When our upstairs bathroom flooded three weeks after we moved into our new house, our insurance agent was vital in helping us get the help we needed!
This type of mentor gives you personalized, expert help and the peace of mind to know that you are on the right track with goal setting when it comes to your financial future. He or she can help protect, manage, and ultimately realize your dreams.
Wherever you are in your life, there are plenty of moments where you don’t want to be held back by uncertainty – and the personalized help of an expert enables you to make better decisions.
I have found that the personal relationships built through all three of these types of mentors has left an invaluable impact on my life.

How did you find your business mentor? I’d love to have one and have been considering it, but am not even sure how to go about finding one! Actually, I think that is probably the biggest reason that so many of us don’t have mentors, at least that is what I find when I talk to other ladies about the whole thing of mentoring. Many of us long for it and really want it, but aren’t sure where to look for mentors or how to get started. Any input about that?

Lydia,
I have an idea where you can get great mentors! Have you heard of the Conscious Creator Mentor Network? I actually JUST signed up for it today, and then I happened to read this post on mentors. It has content from mentors like Marci Lock, Les Brown, Kevin Harrington, so many more, and mentors being added all the time. You sign up and have unlimited access to their online courses.
It also provides avenues for those who want to become mentors (Erin, you should look into this– you’d be a great mentor on homemaking!)
It is only $99/month, and if you get three people to sign up, your subscription is free!
I can’t tell you how excited I am about this. Really, I’m not posting this because I want to advertise!

I hadn’t heard of that! Thanks for sharing!

Now have my own website for the Mentor Network, in case you want to check it out. Thanks! This has totally been life-changing to me.

Hi, Lydia! I asked a blogger I really respect! She had a place on her site for consulting, and I just filled out the form and asked for her rates! A lot of bloggers will have a place on their site that says if they do consulting.

A spiritual mentor and marriage mentors. Both are musts for me!
Erin
Oh yes–these two are great! My homemaking/motherhood mentor fills the spiritual/marriage roles as well!

I have struggled to find someone who is willing to invest in me as a mentor. Someone who will step into my life and give me support and encouragement in a practical and consistent way. Someone to take me under their wing and live their life as an open book before me.
I am praying for more mentors, especially in the blogging world, and trusting that God will bring the right people into my life to help me become the person He created me to be. I have a wonderful support system of people who love me and the best cheering section in the world….but finding a mentor has been challenging.
I love to mentor others, and I find that most of my relationships tend towards me educating or coaching others. And I know that in the right time, God will bring a mentor into my own life.
Thanks for reminding me of the importance of this goal, and affirmation that we are all stronger when we work together!
Erin
I will say a quick prayer now that you will find that, Sarah! Have you been to any blogging conferences or have plans to attend any this year? Those are so great for forming deeper relationships with bloggers too! My blogging/business mentor (Crystal from Money Saving Mom) and I hung out at Allume this year and really hit it off!

Thank you for the encouragement and advice Erin. I am starting a mastermind group with some incredible bloggers I respect and admire, so I am already seeing deeper connections form (which is exciting). I do want to attend a blogging conference, they sound like so much fun. I just have to be careful not to spend too much money on our blog until it is actually making money. I know it is important to invest in your business though, and I will look into a conference that I can drive to.

Financial mentor is truly helpful to run by ideas and plans and help hold you accountable. I have a strong faith, marriage, and encouraging mentor that I love and it truly saves me in so many ways. I am looking for a business mentor to help break down tasks and help me reach my goals or break them down more manageable. A home management mentor would help but I am fortunate that my mother in law watches our kids and helps manage the house with me.
Erin
It sounds like your faith/marriage/encouragement mentor is amazing! This is the first year I’ve had a business mentor, and it’s been AMAZING!!! That is awesome that your MIL is there to help! It was great to see you the other day!
