There is a lot of advice out there! For every piece of advice, there is another piece that contradicts it. So, are you going to the right people for advice?
I first started reading blogs as a brand new mom. I only read two or three for the first few years of motherhood, and I honestly had no idea an entire community of mom bloggers existed.
Fast forward more than eight years, and I’ve now had a blog of my own for nearly six.
But something about the mom blogging culture has begun to alarm me lately.
When I look around the blogosphere, I see a lot of new and/or inexperienced mamas doling out all sorts of advice–for issues which they have very little experience in themselves.
I’ll shoot it to you straight: I’ve been married for nearly 11 1/2 years, and I’ve been a mom for 8 1/2 years.
That means:
- I know a thing or two about marriage, but only from the standpoint of someone whose been married just over a decade. Want tried-and-true marriage advice from someone who’s been at it for the long haul? Check out Two Becoming One.
- I’ve been through the baby years three times–and all within four years. I know a good bit about that season, and I’m embarking on that gig for the fourth time around soon. So if you need some advice on the baby years, I’ve got you covered.
- I breastfed for 6 1/2 years. I might not remember every single detail about breastfeeding, but I’m very experienced in that area.
- But as my children are only in kindergarten and second grade right now, I wouldn’t be the right blogger to read about for advice on how to rear school-age children, tweens, or teens. I’m not there yet. But Amy McCready from Positive Parenting Solutions is a great resource for parenting advice.
- I’ve learned how to keep a clean home, but it’s most definitely a challenging area for me. I can tell you what works for our family, but an expert in the area of home management is Fly Lady.
If you want to learn from some other mamas a few steps ahead (instead of right there in the trenches with you), then I hope you’ll check out next week’s Mom Conference!
The 3rd annual Mom Conference debuts October 11, and I’m excited to be speaking this year on a topic near and dear to my heart–giving yourself a personal retreat!
I’ve been taking personal retreats for over a decade, and I’ve found them even more beneficial since becoming a mom!
The best part about this online conference? It’s free!
Get your conference ticket here now or click below to register (for absolutely FREE!).
Although I’m pumped about speaking, I am even more excited about some of the other seasoned mamas (and a few daddies) who will be teaching on all kinds of topics related to motherhood.
The three days of presentations includes talks from:
- Dr. Laura Markham, Clinical Psychologist, bestselling author and discipline expert at Aha Parenting (Helping Kids – and Yourself – Manage Emotions)
- Katie Kimball, expert on healthy eating for families and founder of Kitchen Stewardship (Want Responsible and Healthy Kids? Teach Them to Cook and Eat Real Food)
- Amy McCready, positive discipline expert and author and creator of Positive Parenting Solutions (Raising Motivated and Grateful Children During this Me, Me, Me Epidemic)
- Jesse Mecham, Founder of You Need a Budget (Budgeting Made Simple)
- Marla Cilley (a.k.a. the Fly Lady), author, home organization and cleaning mentor, founder of FlyLady.net (Specific Systems for Cleaning)
And many more! This is just a sampling of the speakers for this FREE 3-day event!
The Mom Conference is October 11th, 12th and 13th, 2016.
HOW IT WORKS
1. Sign up to attend the conference for FREE (right now, you’ll get some great gifts, just for signing up!).
2. Then, each day of the conference, you will get an email with a link that allows you to access 6 stellar video presentations. You can watch that day’s presentations anytime during the 24- hour viewing period for those presentations (while you’re folding laundry, while your baby naps, whatever works!).
3. You’ll be able to participate for absolutely no charge during the three days of the conference!

Erin,
Well, I’m not a mom – I was actually directed to your site by Keelie Reason 🙂 – but I still really appreciated this post.
Sort of reminded me of Rehoboam’s sin in 1 Kings 12 of rejecting the advice of the older, wiser elders, and then going to the younger friends of his for their advice. Led to his ruin and the division of the nation.
Erin
That’s such a good comparison!!
