When I first set out to write this “Safe in the Sun” series, I had all intentions of making and testing out my own sunscreen recipe and posting it here for you all to try yourselves!
Well, life happens. I’m a humbled homemaker, remember? 😉 I’m not perfect, and I simply ran out of time to “do it all” before Baby Girl arrives any.day.now!
And why re-invent the wheel anyway, when so many other amazing bloggers have some great-looking sunscreen recipes circulating around the web?

Although I’ve enjoyed reviewing and using TruKid, Kabana and MelanSol (full review & giveaway coming tomorrow!) natural sunscreens, undoubtedly–if you have the time–the most frugal sunscreen is one you make yourself.
Here are some I hope to give a try…next summer. 😉
1. Lexie: Natural’s Homemade Natural Sunscreen (and Diaper Cream)
I love using Lexie’s homemade lotion bars, and I’ve been testing out her deodorant, so I have no doubts her sunscreen recipe is a winner. And she makes making it sound super simple.
2. Keeper of the Home’s Homemade Sunscreen Lotion
Stephanie recently posted a sunscreen recipe directly from the MadeOn My Buttered Life eBook. Although she gives directions in the post, I highly recommend the book, as it contains recipes for other great skincare products. (I reviewed the book last summer.) MadeOn actually sells an ingredients kit, so it’s very easy to round up the ingredients to make this particular recipe. (If you buy the kit, you get the book for FREE!)

3. Mommypotamus’s Homemade Sunscreen Lotion Bars
This one is unique in that it hardens like a lotion bar instead of a cream. It will melt in the sun, so make sure to apply indoors or keep in a cooler when outside.

4. “Diaper Cream” Sunscreen by One Good Thing by Jillee
I almost made this sunscreen last week. Why? Because I loved that I could get all the ingredients locally. Instead of having to order zinc oxide like the other recipes, this one calls for 1/4 cup of zinc-oxide based diaper rash cream! (And hey, I think I may still have some of that floating around the house from before we switched to cloth diapers and couldn’t use it anymore!) Depending on where you live, you may have to actually order some of these ingredients online (beeswax, cocoa butter, aloe vera gel, etc.), but I have access to everything I need for this one at my local health store.
5. The Encouraging Home’s Essential Oil Sunscreen Recipes
The most unique of the bunch, in this post, Mary gives 8 different combinations using essential oils and carrier oils to protect from the sun!

Thanks for the great post I could include! Hope to try these next summer! 🙂
Anne @ Quick and Easy Cheap and Healthy
We use sunscreen very rarely, so I haven’t made the effort to invest in the ingredients. But I am very intrigued by the idea!
Erin
I am intrigued as well! I really like the idea of the diaper rash cream-based one since I can get all the ingredients locally. But I also really like the eseential-oil based recipes since I try to keep most of the oils on hand now.
Erin @ My Mommy World
Thanks for posting this! I am excited to try this out…the diaper cream recipe sounds intriguing! I made some homemade liquid soap a few months ago and that turned out really well, so I’m ready to try something else homemade 🙂

I love making stuff at home!

Could you share your liquid soap recipe?? 🙂

Hey! Does anyone know of a recipe using colored iron oxide in a sunscreen stick? Basically, homemade zinka? Our children’s gifted and talented program has an entrepreneurial series where they make things, sell them at recess ‘market,’ and donate their earnings.I know this may open up a can of worms, but please know we are planning on using lip balm tubes, and these children will only be using them once or twice. They want to call it FUNscreen. Thanks…

Thank you for promoting sun safety for families! I just want to urge everyone to be very mindful and careful, as the spf for homemade sunscreens hasn’t really been verified. My four-year-old has pediatric melanoma and we know that forever he will have to be extra careful of sun exposure. Among the pediatric melanoma parent community even the most natural, do-it-your selfers among us are quite leary of, for example using carrot seed oil/coconut oil for sunscreen because it’s hard to be positive that it’ll do what we hope. I like that some of these did include zinc oxide which is an important thing to look for.

I’ve been making my own sun screen for almost 10 years 🙂 I just put together zinc oxide (powder form) titanium dioxide (powder) and natural powdered make up mixing it all to get my skin colour and the brush it on! Simple easy and 100% effective.
