Over the past few years, I’ve been slowly detoxing my kitchen. It’s been a quick fix to transition to non-toxic and/or homemade cleaners, but trading out my kitchen tools and specifically my cookware has taken a bit longer.
So I jumped at the chance to review a cast iron skillet from Mighty Nest! I only owned one cast iron skillet before this, and I will be honest–it has always intimidated me.
But the benefits of cast iron far outweigh my too-long reliance on the “convenience” of my toxic non-stick cookware.
Cast iron:
- heats evenly
- is nonstick withOUT harmful PFOA’s and other chemicals used to make Teflon
- is virtually indestructible, making this skillet last FOREVER (saving money!)
Plus, cooking on cast iron can also help reduce the risk of anemia!
I reviewed the Logic Seasoned Cast Iron Chef Skillet and Cast Iron Scrubber Brush. But I must admit: The first time I used it, I tried to make pancakes, and I didn’t put much oil in the pan, and they were a…flop.
The cast iron scrubber brush came in really handy! And, I can definitely say that it works–well! You don’t want to ever put a cast iron skillet in the dishwasher!!
Thankfully, not even I can ruin a cast iron skillet! I re-seasoned it, along with my older skillet, with some coconut oil. And it was back to tip-top shape in no time!
You can saute, stir fry and even bake in this skillet! It is made in the USA.

Who ever wins will definitely enjoy it. No need for me to enter, but I will link this to FB, etc..
I’ve used cast iron for years. Have 6 fry pans of varying sizes, 3 dutch ovens – 1 really large on and 2 mid size and I use all of them even with just two of us at home now. Mine are in need of reasoning, on my to do list.

Entered and shared! Now I should go buy a cast iron scrubber brush. We have 1 cast iron pot, but we don’t maintain it as well as we could.

The scrubber is amazing!

I just got a lodge cast iron skillet for Christmas! I had never used cast iron before that. I have re-seasoned my pan with coconut oil, and nothing really sticks! And I’ve only used coconut oil or butter in it. I have a few of questions, though:
1. When I make eggs, they turn sort of black on the bottom. (They are not burnt. It’s just a black discoloration or something.) Is that normal? Is it safe?
2. And with the eggs, there are little black specks (it’s not pepper) in them. Is that normal? Is it safe?
3. When I wipe it out after using, the cloth is black. I don’t strive to get all the black out. Is it fine?
Thanks! I just want to be sure I’m using my pan right, and these things are normal…

I love my cast iron. I grew up using it and bought my first skillet when I moved out of my parents house. Now, for gift giving occasions, my dh usually gets me a new piece. I have 3 skillets 6″, 10″, 14″, a flat square griddle, a double burner two sided griddle, 2 dutch ovens and a wok <—-FAVORITE!!! I am hoping for a deep dish roaster with a full lid and small pan sizes for anniversary and mother's day.
Keeping one well maintained is not hard. DON'T USE SOAP! I know that seems like it is not getting cleaned, but (just like a Pampered Chef stone) the more you use it the more it is seasoned. Trust me, it is getting cleaned. Wash with hot water, papertowel dry immediately (or dry it on a burner) and then coat with oil. I put some in the pan and spread it with the papertowel.
One of the dutch ovens and the single burner griddle both were yard sale finds. The owners were just going to throw them away because of the rust and un-seasoned look. DH cleaned them both and we oven seasoned them like a brand new piece. They are both in excellent condition now.
The winner of this give away will be blessed!
