As we continue our “Safe in the Sun” series this week, we’ll be taking a look at three natural sunscreens. First up is TruKid. If you are new to this series, be sure to go back and read “Sunscreen vs. Sun Exposure: Risks & Benefits” and “Benefits of Sun Exposure.”
First up on our natural sunscreen reviews is TruKid. I had never heard of this brand before I started searching for a non-chemical sunscreen to use on my girls. I’ve been thoroughly impressed!
The consistency of the sunscreen is perfect–not too thick and not too thin. Something else I noticed right off the bat was that this sunscreen smells AMAZING. It’s not an icky-chemical-laden smell (since there aren’t any chemicals in it!); it is scented with an essential oil blend. My girls smell soooo good while they are wearing this sunscreen!
What impressed me the most about TruKid was that it*:
- is BPA and phthalate-free,
- is paraben-free,
- is mineral-based (no chemicals),
- contains no Vitamin A, (For more info. on why sunscreens with Vitamin A can potentially increase the risk of skin cancer, read this article.)
- contains non-nano zinc oxide,
- contains many organic ingredients, and it
- kept my girls free from burns!
*If you are unsure why some of these things are important, click on the links to read more about the potential dangers of some of these ingredients if they had been included. For a list of potentially harmful ingredients to avoid in sunscreens, see this article.*
The Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep Database, which rates the safety of sunscreens, gives TruKid a #1 rating–which falls into their lowest hazard rating available! TruKid is also listed on the EWG’s list of best/safest sunscreens for 2012.
You can purchase a TruKid sunscreen right from the company’s website or from Amazon.com.
When I opened my review package from TruKid, I was pleasantly surprised to find not only their amazing, all-natural sunscreen but also a natural, gluten-free shampoo (and they didn’t even know my daughter is gluten free!)!
Although I normally use my homemade baby wash to clean both my girls’ hair and bodies, I was excited to try this shampoo. Just like the sunscreen, it smells A-M-A-Z-I-N-G, and it lathers very, very well. Although I hope to use my homemade wash on the girls a few more years, it does not work for every hair type–especially after the baby stage. I noticed that TruKid seemed to get my girls’ hair cleaner than my homemade wash does.
Some other things that impressed me about the TruKid’s Silly Shampoo were that it:
- is paraben-free,
- is SLS-free,
- contains no artificial colors or fragrances, and is
- BPA and phthalate-free.
You can also get the shampoo (as well as a plethora of other natural skincare products for both kids and grownups) on the company’s website or on Amazon.com.

oops, I guess I clicked “enter” on my entry. I was going to say that I learned that it’s crazy expensive! Looks good, but I don’t think I’d ever buy it!
