The following post is from an article I wrote a few months back for The Mooresville Weekly. I am so excited that, through extra funds we acquired during the Healthy Living eBook Bundle Sale (which I am sure many of you purchased!), our family is able to adopt a widow this year! As soon as we get the information on our widow, I will update with a post about her!! Is God calling you to adopt a widow as well?
At 30 years old, Lydia has already experienced a cheating husband and widowhood. When the Ugandan’s husband was caught with a neighbor’s wife, he was killed on the spot.
Lydia was left with nothing. Without the support of a husband, Lydia has no way to pay for food for her family or schooling for her children. They have nowhere to live. And Lydia is not alone.
Women all over Uganda are left in situations just like Lydia when their husbands die, said Lisa Ward, a NC resident who ministers to the widows.
“Once they become a widow they have no rights to their property or possessions, she said. “There are no jobs like we have, and they have no way to earn an income.”
But women like her have hope–through Hope 4 Woman, International.
Lisa became involved with Hope 4 Women, International after she traveled to Uganda in March with Dress a Girl Around the World (DAG). DAG provides dresses for impoverished girls. Lisa became the DAG North Carolina representative after reading an article about the organization in March 2011.
Hope 4 Women’s purpose is to identify widows who don’t have a way to earn an income and work with various training organizations that help the women acquire a skill. For $36 per month or $432 per year, a widow can attend school to learn a trade that will enable her to earn an income for her family. At the end of the training, the widow begins her new business and is monitored for a year to guarantee she is self sufficient.
