I remember the very early years of marriage and then soon after motherhood, when I felt completely exhausted, unsure of anything, and like I had been thrown into the deep end of life without even a pair of arm cuff floats to help keep my head above water. Oh, I was overwhelmed, and empty of joy.
I thought I had to know everything about being a godly wife and mother before I even began that journey, so when the pressures and demands of these portions of my life came in droves, I did not know what to do. What a blessing it was to learn that I did not have to be “perfect,” but simply commit my life to Him each day (here’s a post on embracing real life in place of an imaginary “perfect” one).
Thankfully, it was not too long after that when I began to turn to Yahweh in the Word to find hope and encouragement to continue for another day. His Word helped to attack the lies in my mind, and proclaim the Truth that brings freedom from bondage. Day after day, year after year, His Word speaks comfort to me, and continues to take captive the deceptions and worries of the world, and replace them with His total Truth (for scriptures to deal with fear and worry, click here).
His Word is a treasure-trove of assurance, wisdom, and practical application for us even today, which truly reveals His majesty and Sovereignty! What a blessing we have in Yahweh. What an honor it is to call Him our Abba.
Some days can be so overwhelming, though, that we must practice focusing our minds on Him that our hearts not be led astray. This is where the Word comes in.
So, for those days when things feel upside down, hopeless, or just completely non-stop, here are 25 scriptures to help you focus your mind on and return to the experience His shalom truly brings: peace in the storms of life.

My favorite verse is Philippians 4:6-7. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
This verse can give me hope on the hard days.

Haha, yes, Psalms definitely are soothing for the soul. Psalm 119 has been a powerhouse of encouragement and promise for us time and time again. And of course Psalm 23, which it such a beautiful word picture of our loving Good Shepherd’s gentility and love for us. What an honor it is to serve Him daily =0) We are truly blessed!
Thank you for writing this. I saw it originally on FB and pinned it for later. But I woke early this morning with a stirring and had to get up and journal and pray. And I felt the Lord leading me to write out scriptures for throughout my day to have around the house. So I remembered this post and came here. I had never seen this scripture before when about 15 yrs ago I was reading my Bible (having suffered from varying degrees of depression for 25 yrs) I ‘happened’ upon this verse. I felt ‘waves’ gently washing over my heart and I realized a few weeks later I was no longer depressed. Even two years later, when my 21 yr old twin son was killed in an accident the depression never returned! The Lord did such a deep work. sigh…

So glad to read this……Wish I could feel those waves. I did feel heat once , real waves of depression when i lost someone it went thru my chest, like from my feet up. A hot vapor and wave feeling..

I love the Psalm 91:1-2 verse you shared. That really spoke to me today.
My favorite is John 16:33- “These things I have spoken to you that in Me you may have peace. In the world, you will have tribulation, but be of good cheer, for I have overcome the world.”

It always amazes me when the Lord gives me just what I need when I need it.

Praise the Lord! May your birth be full of thanksgiving and praise! The Lord has been so constantly faithful with our six children and helping me to navigate raising them and loving them, while pruning my soul away from my flesh. It’s been a humbling and fruitful process of growth and true prosperity of the Spirit! What a blessing to walk with Him in each day =0) I will be praying that your birth goes well! Psalm 61:2 helped me during the time my mom had triplets and they didn’t survive.

I have another one to add that has helped me many times. It is Philippians 4:13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. So many times when I felt I did not have the strength or energy to go on, I recite this verse over and over in my heart and head as well as saying a prayer. God always gives me the strength I need.

The Lord is the stronghold of my life— of whom shall I be afraid?” ~ Psalm 27: 1) it reminds me that even when I feel overwhelmed by daily struggles I shouldn’t fear failure because I have him on my side to pick me up. By definition being emotionally overwhelmed means to be completely submerged by your thoughts and emotions about all of life’s current problems, to the point where you lack efficacy and feel frozen or paralyzed. Compare the feeling of being overwhelmed to being submerged after a rough wave.
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. Just read calm verses.
