Replacing your skin care products with ones you make on your own can be an easy switch!
Guest Post by Emily Woosley of Non-Toxic Sweetheart
What if I told you that you don’t have to spend your hard-earned money on beauty products? Would you believe me if I told you that I have gotten better results and more compliments on my skin when I started making my own beauty products?
It’s very empowering realizing I don’t need to pay someone for these products that I can make.
You can do this too and your skin will thank you.
Why did I start making my own skin care products?
Manufacturers put toxic chemicals in their products. They include big words like Sodium Laurel Sulfate (SLS), Parabens/Paraffins, Propylene Glycol/PEG, DEA, TEA, MEA, Aluminum, Petroleum, Mineral Oil, Talc, Triclosan, Fragrances, and Isopropyl Alcohol.
I did some research and found out that these chemicals over time are linked to:
- Reproductive Problems
- Heart Disease
- Heart Failure
- Organ Toxicity
- Kidney and liver problems
This can’t be taken lightly.
I decided that I would slowly replace my products with ones that I made and the results have been fantastic. You can do it, too! It’s easier than you think.
Skin care is expensive. If your wash your face you know this. I never look forward to getting to the end of my skin care product because it hurts my wallet. That’s money could be spent on fun things like new shoes, a new purse or … new shoes!
I’d love to share three safe skin care products that are super simple to make:
This Face Moisturizer Is The Best Around …
BeaYOUtiful Face Moisturizer
- 1⁄4 cup Shea Butter
- 1⁄2 tsp Argan Oil
- 1⁄2 tsp Jojoba oil
- 1 Tbsp. Aloe
- 1 Tbsp. Avocado oil
- 4 drops of Frankincense Essential Oil (EO)
- 2 drops Tea Tree EO
- 4 drops of Vitamin E Oil
Use a double broiler to melt down your butter on a low temperature. Add in your oils. Let it cool in the refrigerator. Once it solidifies, mix it up using a mixer. Store in a container with a lid.
Face scrubs that give you a glow
Face scrubs are a great exfoliant to remove dead skin build up, improving the appearance and health of your skin. Your skin is then able to grow back new cells, leaving you with that beautiful glow and fresh skin that is more absorbent to your moisturizer.
Get creative when it comes to making your own scrub. Here is one of my favorites!
Grapefruit Himalayan Salt Face and Lip Scrub
- 1⁄4 cup Himalayan Salt (pink salt)
- 1⁄4 cup Fractionated Coconut Oil
- 1⁄2 Tbsp. Raw Honey
- 4 drops of vitamin E Oil
- 5 drops Grapefruit Essential Oil
Mix them all together and store in a jar with a lid. Apply after you wash your face. Gently massage the scrub around and don’t forget your neck!
Use a wash cloth and rinse off with very warm water. Don’t worry if you get some in your mouth. It’s nontoxic!
When finished, put on your moisturizer and your skin will thank you. Do this one or two times a week.

The Foundation Powder That Totally ROCKS
Bare Mineral Powder has been my go-to powder for years. But after having babies and all the hormone changes my body went through, my skin went through changes too.
I realized that my skin was just dehydrated and the Bare Minerals was drying out my skin and not working anymore. So I went into the kitchen and made my own. (Cue ROCKY-inspirational music here.) It was a night and day difference. It gives me a naturally beautiful coverage that DOESN’T enhance my wrinkles.
So, get in the kitchen and pound you up some good stuff. You’ve got those wrinkles up on the ropes! (Sorry, the ROCKY music has me using boxing metaphors!)
Mama Looks Good Foundation Powder
- 1 cup arrowroot powder
- 1 Tbsp. ground cinnamon
- 1 Tbsp. bentonite clay (aka, magic clay)
- 1⁄2 Tbsp. ground nutmeg
- 1⁄2 Tbsp. ground ginger
- a few drops on Vitamin E oil
Mix them all together and store in a glass jar with a lid. You’ll have to play around with the mix to match your skin color. Make sure you get good quality organic powder.
Okay. Listen up. You now are empowered to take control of your health. But, what will you do with this info? I know what you may be thinking …
- I’m too busy.
- That’s too much work.
- Who’s going to answer the door? (Wait. That one’s mine.)
The reality is if you don’t do anything with this info then it was just a waste of your time. I want you to take control of your health in easy, small steps. You can make one of these each week, each month or each season. These seemingly small changes will do big things in your overall health.
So, cue the ROCKY music… What’s it gonna be, girl?
Wondering where to find the ingredients for the recipes in this post? A local health food store will have many of them, or even more convenient, order online through Amazon!
