If you’re wondering about an easy, tangible way to give this year, I encourage you to donate a coat to a coat drive.

‘Tis the season for holiday joy, but it’s also the season where many children and adults alike are living in bitter cold conditions with no coats to keep them warm.
With more than 45 million Americans living in poverty and temperatures dipping below freezing, the need for warmth is great and coats are a must!
Here are my top four reasons to donate a coat right now:
1. It’s an easy way to declutter your home.
This past fall, I did a cleaning and decluttering challenge, and it felt SO good to get rid of so many things! I filled many large garbage bags with clothes and several coats. I found that the coats, because they are bulkier, really left a lot of room in our closets once they were gone!
2. It doesn’t cost you anything.
If you’re struggling financially yourself, you might feel that you don’t have much to give. And maybe you don’t–monetarily. But donating a coat that your children have outgrown or that simply doesn’t match your style anymore–doesn’t cost you a thing!
3. It teaches your children about giving to others.
My husband and I recently took our three girls along with us when we donated several coats to Burlington’s Warm Coats and Warm Hearts Coat Drive. At 2, 4 and 6, they are very impressionable, and we were able to talk to the girls about how their donations would make a difference in the lives of those who would receive them and stay warm this winter!
4. Someone needs your coat.
There are so many people–even in your own communities!–who will go cold this winter because they do not own a coat. That coat that is gathering dust in your closet? Someone truly needs it!
