Ever wonder if it’s REALLY possible to get clothes clean without toxins? I have. Today’s post will introduce you to a super simple natural laundry detergent that proves that getting clothes clean without toxins is realistic!
Like many people, my journey to a more natural lifestyle began when I became a mother. When I looked down at that first little redhead, I suddenly realized that I was responsible for protecting her from the many toxins in our world.
And, to be completely honest, I really hadn’t given much thought to the toxins before that time. After all, my generation and my parents’ generation and the generations before them “had survived” it all–hadn’t they?
Well, perhaps not. What I didn’t understand then that I do now was that the toxin load in our food, our personal and home care products and even our very environment have exponentially increased in the past 20 to 30 years.
There is no need to fear. God is still in control.
But with this knowledge, we CAN take action.
Transitioning to non-toxic laundry detergent and cleaning supplies is one of the easiest changes you can make. But this one simple switch can greatly minimize your toxin exposure!
Common toxins included in conventional laundry detergents and cleaning supplies include:
- Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS)/sodium laureth sulfate (SLES)
- 1,4-dioxane
- NPE (nonylphenol ethoxylate)
- Phosphates (source)
According to Dr. Mercola, “Not only are these chemicals potentially damaging to your health, but they are also contaminating waterways and harming the environment.”
As a Christian, I want to care for both my family and be a good steward of God’s Creation!
Thankfully, there are many natural laundry detergents and cleaning supplies to choose from on the market today.
I recently had the opportunity to review laundry detergent, soap flakes and soap from Meliora K., a small business dedicated to giving families hungry to make the switch to natural cleaning products the tools necessary to make that happen.
Meliora K.‘s products are strikingly simple, but they do a great job. Instead of a plethora of additives to create what is essentially fake scents and “foam,” Meliora K. sticks to the basics: sodium carbonate (washing soda), sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) and their hand-made, cold-processed coconut oil soap.
But why not just make your own homemade natural laundry detergent?
Good question! I have posted on this before and even gave a round-up of 5 homemade laundry detergent recipes.
This is something I love about Meliora K.: they are actually committed to helping you make your own!
Instead of hiding their recipe, they give it plainly. In fact, the whole reason they sell their cold-processed coconut oil soap is to give families an alternative to the controversial Fels-Naptha that many have traditionally used in homemade laundry detergent recipes.
Meliora K. even sells their soap pre-grated for those of you who prefer to not take the time to hand grate–or prefer to keep your food processor for…food.
Meliora K. makes it easy to make your own detergent.
And, if purchasing natural laundry detergent is in your budget, there is absolutely no shame in not making your own. (I personally do a lot of things, but I do not make my own laundry detergent.)
Moms today live busier lifestyles than ever. Between the cooking from scratch and cleaning and educating our children and running in-home businesses–not to mention involvement in church and community activities–sometimes something has got to give. We are not superwomen, and we cannot do it all!
But what about removing stains? Does this simple of a laundry detergent work?
I had the very same question. As simple as the Meliora K. formula is, it actually does fight stains!
On the package, it suggests wetting an old toothbrush and dipping it into the laundry detergent and rubbing it in a circular motion directly onto any stains.
I held my breath as I did this! I wanted to write a good, honest review, and I was a little skeptical that the stains would come out so easily.
But, voila! I was proved wrong! I was amazed when I pulled my little girl’s stained dress out of the washing machine. The marker spot and other spot of brown, organic substance (ahem) BOTH came out! There is no trace of them, as you can see in the pictures above and below!
Not just for laundry…
The Meliora K. soap flakes and cold-pressed coconut oil soap can be used for a variety of cleaning–from floors to counters to high chairs and everything in between. Simply add water, and your “grandma’s favorite cleaner” is yours as well.
Want to WIN some Meliora K. products? 2 Winners! Each will receive “A Green Cleaning Kit”: Right Hand Laundry Soap, Really Grate Soap Flakes, and No Frills Soap Bar!

I make my own detergent, I follow the super laundry sauce recipe, only using a veggie oil based soap, as we are vegan, and fels and zote, besides being laden with nasty chemicals and perfumes, are both made with animal fat 🙁 I find all of my clothes are cleaner and my whites dont become dingy after time. I will never go back to buying detergent again!! I am so excited about the giveaway and am keeping my fingers crossed!! 🙂
Erin
I hope you win! The soap flakes are so nice!

Cherie
I tried to order a couple of the bars of soap and couldn’t find a place to put the discount code. And do they accept anything other form of payment besides PayPal, I don’t have a PayPal account.
Kate
Hi Cherie, sorry you’re having trouble with our cart. If you add items to your shopping cart and then click on “shopping cart”, there is an option to use a coupon code and that’s where you can put in the code. (our cart doesn’t have a good way to add this later in the process). Also, Paypal will process you as a guest without needing to sign up for a paypal account, you can use a credit or debit card. If you have other issues you can post here or contact us directly through the Meliora K Contact Us form and we’ll get you figured out. Thanks!

Hi Cherie! Kate, the owner of Meliora K, answered here. Let us know if you still have any troubles!

It’s a really great product!
Cindy
do these more natural laundry soaps work with HE washers?
Kate from Meliora K
Hi Cindy, the soap we use in the laundry soap at Meliora K is coconut oil-based and low sudsing, so the recipe works great in HE washers. Conventional detergents use foaming agents, so they had to be reformulated to work with HE machines. We didn’t bother with any of that in the first place!
Janice
Just started switching over the last few months due to health issues. Would love to try these products.
Erin
Non-toxic products definitely improve your health!
Tina

I’ve made my own before but currently we’re using Eco-Nuts liquid detergent (made from soap nuts). I’d love to try another natural cleanser.
Erin
Eco Nuts are great, too. I really enjoy both.
Dee M.
Are any of these recipes good for HE washers
Erin
The Meliora K does not make the big bubbles that clog HE machines, so, yes, I believe it’s a good option. (I personally do not own a HE, however.)
Judy M.
I make my own detergent and have done so with and without Fels Naptha and I would love to try this as an alternative.
