ThredUP is a great resource for women’s and kids’ high-quality secondhand fashion (like a well curated online consignment store) – with a range of brands and up to 90% off the original retail price.
So seriously, guys: I was wrong.
Several months ago, I wrote about how I didn’t like to buy clothing for myself online–even though I do purchase many other items on the web.
Why was I was afraid to shop for my wardrobe online?
I had several hesitations:
First, I thought I would choose the wrong size.
I gained a significant amount of weight during my third pregnancy four years ago. Although I recently lost 20 pounds, I was terrified that the clothing would not fit.
I thought it would be more expensive.
My parents taught me to shop the clearance racks. When I enter a store, I head straight for the back.
When I became a mom, I fell in love with consignment shopping. I learned that I can find like-new items for a fraction of the cost of retail prices, but women’s consignment shops are a lot harder to come by than children’s.
I thought I would spend hours upon hours combing through websites.
Let’s be honest: I just don’t have time to spend extra hours online looking for clothes for myself because I already spend so many hours online blogging!
The thought of scrolling through page after page of clothing did not appeal to me at all. (I know–I’m the rare woman who does not typically enjoy clothes shopping!)
Boy was I wrong!
Not only did ordering clothing through thredUP prove me wrong on all of these points, but it exceeded my wildest expectations in so many areas.
Confessions of a thredUP Convert
Receiving my thredUP order was like getting a gift in the mail!
An adorable polka dot box showed up on my doorstep, and inside my finds were hand-folded with cute thredUP tags, wrapped in nice tissue paper, all held together with a cute sticker.
1. Everything I ordered fit!
I ordered 7 items in my first thredUP box (all pictured in this post)–3 shirts, 3 pairs of pants, and one pair of neutral flats. I was thrilled that everything fit perfectly!
There were two simple things I did before ordering to ensure my items would fit upon arrival:
- I measured myself so I knew the exact inches around my waist, thighs, etc.
- When I found things that I was interested in, I checked out the brands’ websites for sizing charts. This was super quick and easy once I knew my measurements.
ThredUp actually has handy size and brand filters, so you can order items from brands that you already know your size in. In the event that something doesn’t fit, thredUP offers a super easy return system.
2. I saved A LOT of money!
ThredUP makes it so that you can afford brands and designers you might not normally be able to, and even though they are an online consignment shop, many of the items they sell are new with tags!
Two of the seven items I chose were new yet cost a fraction of the original prices.
ThredUP estimates the original prices, and all-in-all, I ended up saving 73% off retail!
To make my money stretch even more, I purchased pieces that would coordinate, so it made at least three complete outfits, but I think I can mix and match some of these to make even more outfits.
You can make money!
And one more thing? You can actually make money (or store credit) on thredUP by selling your own items! ThredUP is a great solution for women who want to get rid of their family’s gently-used clothing without ever even leaving the house, or paying for shipping.
They will send you a postage-paid bag, and you simply stuff the bag with your gently-used clothing and place it in the mailbox. I’ve been doing this for a while, and I love not having to tag or deliver the items myself!
You can even estimate your payout using their calculation tool! If your items don’t sell, you can opt for thredUP’s Return Assurance; if you want your unaccepted items back, you can pay $12.99 to ensure that you get them.
Otherwise, those items are passed on to textile recyclers and are made into pillows, pot holders and other cool upcycled stuff.
3. It was fast!
ThredUp offers a TON of search filters. So, instead of combing through page after page of their site, I was able to very quickly narrow my search to the specific colors, styles, and sizes I wanted.
This made the entire experience super quick, and I was able to do it all from the comfort of my couch!
