Am I the only mom who swells with pride when she sneaks healthy stuff in under the radar? I didn’t think so. 😉
Drink up, kids!
Healthy Homemade Chocolate Milk
I’m a big fan of occasional treats just for the sake of enjoyment. But I also love coming up with healthier homemade versions that the kids (and I) love just as much! Psst – have you seen my Grain Free Chocolate Chunk Cookies that taste just like the real thing??
And when I can use raw cacao (hello, antioxidants!), maple syrup, and gut healthy collagen to make them, it’s a total win-win.
Oh, and did I tell you how fast this chocolate milk is to make? I make 4 cups at a time by placing the milk and other ingredients in a half gallon mason jar, then giving it a quick buzz with the immersion blender. If you don’t have one, a standard blender would work too. If we have any left over – and that’s a big if – I just screw the lid on and store the jar in the fridge. The next day, I give it a gentle shake, unscrew the lid, and pour!
Collagen Hydrolysate + Other Shockingly Easy Gut Health Tips!
Gut health has been a major emphasis in our home over the past year – we even did the GAPS diet – and each of us has experienced noticeable benefits in our overall health because of it.
But, it didn’t take long for me to find out that fermenting vegetables, culturing kefir, brewing kombucha, and making bone broth for a family of four is a full time job! Some of you do it week in and week out for families larger than mine and are nodding your heads in agreement. I’m in awe of you – truly!
I, on the other hand, started searching desperately for shortcuts that wouldn’t compromise on gut health benefits right away. After months of research and product testing, I came up with 10 gut health tips and products I still use to this day to save me time! I even compiled them into an eBook called Zero Effort Gut Health that’s loaded with practical suggestions, product recommendations, and cost comparisons!
One of my favorite products from the eBook is Collagen Hydrolysate powder. It’s the cold soluble form of gelatin (similar to what’s found in bone broth), and gives this rich chocolate milk a creamy texture and flavor, while also adding protein and giving the gut lining some extra love.
I discovered it a few months ago, when my son still needed the nutritional benefits of bone broth, but was SO done with having to drink it at every meal. Like, D-O-N-E. He refused any type of soup (except his favorite chili) and definitely wasn’t going near a mug of broth! I started stirring the collagen powder into a little watered down juice each day and even developed a Healthy Homemade Hot Chocolate recipe with it. Success – he loved it!
Now we add it to our coffee, yogurt, or oatmeal and can hardly tell it’s there! But, on the days when you just want a steamy mug of hot chocolate or a glass of chocolate milk, why not get a little extra collagen while you’re at it, right?
- 8 oz milk
- 1 Tbsp raw cacao
- 1 Tbsp collagen hydrolysate
- 1 Tbsp pure maple syrup
- Place all ingredients in a 16 oz mason jar or tall glass with wide bottom.
- Use immersion blender to mix until smooth (Alternatively, blend in a blender and pour into drinking glass).
- This chocolate milk goes FAST at my house. I usually mix 4 cups at a time in a half gallon mason jar. The immersion blender fits down into the jar and there is plenty of extra space so the milk doesn't spill over when mixing.
- Leftovers can be covered and refrigerated. Use a spoon to give the mixture a good stir just before serving.
