We all need a place to retreat and relax, but a trip to the spa can be out of the budget most of the time. However, there are a few ways you can turn your bathroom into a spa without breaking the bank.
A little confession…I love getting a massage. If I had unlimited funds, it would be one of those things that I would do on a regular basis.
It is so relaxing, and it’s nice just to have that time to myself with no one knocking on the door or sticking their fingers under the door or yelling, “Mommy!” through the door.
As a mom, self-care is important. It doesn’t not mean that we neglect our kids or that we selfishly shirk our responsibilities. However, taking a little time for ourselves to rejuvenate and refresh is essential if we want to be the best mom and wife we can be.
Often times, going to a spa or getting a massage is just not in the budget. Even finding time alone can be a challenge.
So I’ve come up with 7 ways to turn your bathroom into a spa. Pass the kids and responsibilities off to someone for 30 minutes to an hour and just relax, rejuvenate, and refresh.
7 Ways to Turn Your Bathroom Into a Spa
There are 7 ways you can to turn your bathroom into a spa. You don’t have to do all 7…just using 2 or 3 of them can help transform your space into a relaxing oasis.
1) Change up the Decor
When moving into a house, a lot of times wall decor is one of the last things to go up, but changing out a few pictures or items on the wall can change the look and feel of a room.
We’ve had some of the items above for a while because I love the cool tones of the teal, but we have also added a few new items to change the depth and arrangement. We also added some different textures to bring in different elements.
I love the positive messages that they remind me to focus on. The little canvas was a gift from a dear friend, so I think about her every time I see it.
You can find all kinds of prints or other decor to fit your style and taste. I found several things that I love on Etsy and Jane.com and a few of the crosses and other items came from Hobby Lobby. Of course, Amazon always a plethora of items to choose from
2) Soothing Sounds
One of the things that I love to do while in the bath is listen to audiobooks (2 free downloads), podcasts, or Kindle Unlimited (2 free months).
Sometimes I’ll read with my Kindle. Other times, I just like to sit in the quiet and be still.
However, I find that is hard for me to drown out sounds that I can hear from around the house, so I found the solution for that is a sound machine that plays nature or other sounds. My daughter has this nature sounds alarm clock in her room, so I have thought about taking it into the bathroom with me.
3) Shower Diffuser
For Christmas, we added a diffuser (available on Amazon as well) to our shower. I had always tried adding a few drops of oil in the shower or looked at other ways to fill the shower stall with some aromatherapy.
I just couldn’t really find anything that worked well, and regular diffusers were not safe to use.
So when I found out about this diffuser specifically made for the shower, I was so excited and just had to try it. I absolutely love it. It allows you to put one or two bottles of your favorite oil into the wicks, and it lightly diffuses it into the shower. So relaxing!
4) Essential Oils
Aromatherapy is such a great way to improve your mental, emotional, and physical health. Since I started using essential oils, putting them in the bath has been one of my favorite ways to incorporate them into my health routine. It doesn’t take a lot…just a few drops.
There are certain oils that Will and I prefer for certain things. We mainly use Plant Therapy, Rocky Mountain, and Doterra:
- relaxing – lavendar or tranquil or tranquility
- calming – let it go or tension relief or calm
- relief – muscle aid or rapid relief or relieve me
- congestion – respir aid or breathe ease
- immunity – immune aid or immune strength
- mood – blue booster or at peace
There are countless other oils from Plant Therapy (use code humbledhomemaker10 for 10% off) and Rocky Mountain Oils that we love and use on a frequent basis. We don’t really stick to one brand of oils but instead use the oil or blend that we like best from different companies.
You can also grab an affordable stylish diffuser. They are a little more than the cheaper plastic options, but they look nice. Plant Therapy and Rocky Mountain also have some that we use and love.
5) Candles
Candles are one of the easiest ways to turn your bathroom into a spa and add a little ambiance to lighten the mood.
My favorite candles are the wood wick candles from Free Reign Farm. They smell divine, and the wood wick adds a little crackling sound that reminds me of sitting by the fire. (Use code THH10 for 10% off your order.)Â And even better, they are not made with yucky chemicals or fragrances.
You can also find a few options on Amazon, just make sure you look at the ingredients. Grove Collaborative has some more natural choices as well.
6) Bubble Bath and Salts
I have to admit that I enjoy a good soak in the tub and try to take a detox bath every so often.
One of my favorite bubble baths is the Alaffia Lavender. It’s made with safe ingredients and makes a good amount of bubbles. My kids love this one too, and they usually get some in their stockings for Christmas. I do also use the Dr. Teal’s Foaming Bath because it has a couple of different scents, but it does have a few ingredients that I’m not crazy about.
The other thing I love to add to my bath is Redmond Sea Soak Bath Salt (use this link for 15% off). It is a completely natural bath salt that is full of minerals and is great for the skin. I also use regular plain Epsom Salt or the Dr. Teal’s Epsom Salt.
From time to time, I like to throw a bath bomb into the tub as well. The hubby will sometimes make them for me, or we will order a few from Free Reign Farm because they are all natural.
I also recently discovered the Tohi line of spa products from Rocky Mountain Oils.
7) Skin Treatments
After three years or so of looking for a truly natural makeup brand, I finally took the plunge and decided to transition my previously piece-mealed makeup and skincare to Beautycounter.
I am loving it! My favorite products so far are:
Flawless in Five – the concealer and volumizing mascara (both included in this set) as well as the dew skin tinted moisturizer with SPF are my favorite products in the set. I also LOVE the tinted brow gel.
I’ve also been using and loving the Countermatch Skincare Regimen, which includes:
- Countermatch Pure Calm Cleansing Milk
- Countermatch Hydrogel Radiance Toner
- Countermatch Intense Moisture Serum
- Countermatch Adaptive Moisture Lotion
- Countermatch Recovery Sleeping Cream

I love your idea, especial the candles. Candles are great. Can you teach us used to candles in some other way? Thank you
Deborah
Love the idea of shower diffuser but the links in article don’t work for me. Great ideas for creating a spa like bathroom.
