Inside: Grove Collaborative is one of my favorite stores. I order from them regularly. But there are a few things I don’t love too. Here’s my completely honest review!
Confession: When my children were babies and toddlers, I absolutely dreaded going out to the store with them. It seemed like…
- At least one kid was always screaming.
- One kid was begging for candy or toys or any number of shiny objects at her eye level.
- And I would, inevitably, make it out of the store without everything on my list.
When online shopping entered the scene, I was hesitant to try it at first. Like anything new, I didn’t know if it would actually, indeed, save me time and–more importantly–money.
But I quickly learned that it did. Not only does online shopping–via Grove or any number of other venues I frequent–save me both time and money–but it also saves my sanity.
In this post, I’m giving you the nitty-gritty on what I LOVE–and what I don’t–about this online store I’ve been using for many years now.

What I LOVE About Grove
1. It’s SUPER convenient: I can shop from home!
Earlier tonight, I realized we were almost out of dishwashing detergent. When I was taking a shower, I noted I was almost out of conditioner.
So right before I started writing this post, I took all of five minutes, logged into my Grove account, ordered those two items and voila! They will arrive on my doorstep in a few days!
I hate running to a bunch of stores for everything on my list. Grove makes it incredibly easy to shop from home.
2. They offer FREE shipping over $29 with VIP membership.
I have the VIP membership, and I feel like the cost for this pays for itself many times over (especially if you order frequently!).
I’ve never had to pay shipping for my Grove orders because of the VIP membership–as long as the order size is $29 or more! (I’ve never NOT met this minimum!)
3. They carry products from brands I love and trust.
I am not typically brand loyal, but there are certain brands that I do love and trust.
Seventh Generation, Molly’s Suds, Dr. Bronner’s, Earthpaste, Acure Organics, Seventh Generation Baby, and Yes to are some of the brands I order from Grove on a regular basis.
Although not all of the brands they carry are 100% toxin-free, many of them are.
They are all more natural than conventional brands, so I don’t have to waste a lot of time sifting through brands that might not be the best options for my family’s health and wellness.
4. They send reminders before they ship!
Before Grove, I was always hesitant to sign up for “subscribe and save” type programs. I was afraid I would get something in the mail I had forgotten to cancel!
This has never once happened to me with Grove because I receive text messages and emails two days before my orders ship.
I’ve never once had a shipment arrive without me knowing about it.
5. They make it really easy to delay or cancel orders.
When I get a notification that an order is about to ship, it reminds me to log in and either go ahead with the order (I usually add and delete things from my basket!), delay an order (you can delay for months!), or cancel orders.
For example, I have delayed the next month’s order that last time I had a baby, and I didn’t want to accidentally forget about it (even though I don’t think it’s possible with their reminders!). I also delayed orders when we went to Costa Rica for the summer in 2015.

6. They can help save you money–sometimes.
I typically spend less money when I order online than when I shop at stores.
BUT, always double check prices against other online venues before ordering. We’ll discuss this more in the “what I don’t love” section below.
7. They offer member freebies all.the.time!
I get emails all the time with VIP member perks. I’ve gotten free candles, free hand lotions, free scrub brushes, and more! It’s just random thank-yous like this that make me such a loyal customer!
8. They will quickly replace damaged products.
A few months ago, I had ordered two full bags of Molly’s Suds laundry detergent. I opened the boxes to find they had both split and part of the detergent was all over the box! I notified Grove, and they immediately sent two replacement bags!
9. They have their own awesome brand.
Grove has their own brand too, and they are constantly adding to it! I love their non-toxic soy candles, their glass spray bottle and walnut scrubbers, and their hand lotion.
10. They have the best customer service ever.
They have a customer service chat, and VIP members also get assigned their own customer service rep.
Seriously, I have never dealt with a company that is more committed to its customers.
I LOVE being able to get on and chat with reps whenever I have a question or issue with an order. They are simply the best.
11. They PRICE MATCH!
Y’all! I didn’t even realize this when I first wrote the post!
Simply send their customer service a picture of where the price of the product is cheaper, and they will match the price!
I’ve done this with items from Amazon, Target, Walmart, etc.! This way, you truly get the very best price!

What I Don’t Love About Grove
1. They sometimes add items to your cart (but you can easily remove them).
Yes, this is true. I like to think they do it to be helpful.
And some people do find this helpful–especially those who are pressed for time and don’t want to waste it browsing the online store.
I spent some time looking through all of what Grove carries early on, so by this point I feel I don’t have to waste time searching for items anyway (plus, they have a really simple search tool that lets you find items in seconds!).
How does it work? Grove will add items to your cart based on what you have purchased in the past.
I don’t love this because I’m always thinking: “What if I miss one of their reminders and accidentally order and pay for something they have added to my cart?!”
That said, I have never once–in many years’ time!–ordered and/or paid for something I didn’t want.
Because their reminder system is so great, I’ve always been able to go in and tweak my order before it ships.

2. Their prices aren’t always the best on the market (but they have a GREAT solution to that!).
Grove’s prices aren’t bad, but they aren’t always the best either.
If you are shopping purely to save money (and not necessarily time), you might do better shopping for items at several venues (like Grove, Amazon, and ALDI, for example) than you will by shopping exclusively at Grove.
However, Grove will PRICE MATCH.
See #11 above for more information! YAY!
3. Once in a while, a product will be out of stock.
This has only happened to me a few times, but it has happened (and it feels inconvenient when it does).
That said, the customer service chat people have bent over backwards to make sure I get the item when it’s back in stock.
They are truly phenomenal.
4. Shipping may not be the fastest.
This might be dependent on where you are located. I am in North Carolina, and it usually only takes three to four days to get my Grove orders. I don’t think 3-4 days is bad, but in an age where people are used to getting things next day, it may be a small issue for some.
This is where the subscribe feature is really convenient because you can schedule your shipments to arrive when you know you will need the items–so you never run out (or have to run to the store!).
What Grove is–and what they are not:
In a nutshell, Grove sells top-rated, natural-based toiletries, skincare, cleaning, baby, and other household supplies. They also sell a few supplements–like vitamins.
They do not sell food. Previously, Grove was named ePantry, and I think the name Grove Collaborative reflects their brand so much better.

Yes, and this is a great overview. I have been tracking my spending for years, and I find that even when I pay a bit more for an individual product, I tend to spend LESS when I order online. My guess is that because I’m often shopping with several kids, extra items are getting snuck into the basket, or there are impulse purchases due to being tired/stressed by the extra hands, etc… so using companies like Grove actually saves money in the long run. I’ve also found that some of their products are my very favorites in that category – the hand sanitizer is the ONLY one I will use. I love their lip balms too!
EMIly
I’ve been using grove for a few months now and when you have a VIP you can price match to amazon.
Erin
Oh my goodness! How did I not know this?! I am getting details from Grove now and will update the post! I’m excited about this because I can use it myself! Thanks for sharing!
John from Grove
Thank you so much for reaching out! We’re always happy to price match for our VIPs, just add the product to your cart, and send us the link to where you see it for less at [email protected] We adjust before your next shipment so that you get the best price!
Karen Saari
I’ve been using Grove VIP membership for about 6 months and I love it more all the time. My shipments only take about a day to arrive which is super nice.
Every product I’ve purchased from them has been awesome. I just received my order yesterday, and when I was going over my order the day before, I was considering ordering that white caddy you have in a few of your pictures. Are you happy with it? Is it sturdy enough to carry around a few things?
Denise Sultenfuss
At first, I was skeptical with Grove, but I agree with you regarding their keen notifications. Even though I am both frugal and all-natural driven, my busy life as a wife, homeschool mom, and blogger doesn’t always afford me the time to frequent several stores to nab the best price. My skepticism wanes with every fulfilled order.
Thanks for this insightful, honest post.
Nicole
Don’t you have to have $10 minimum before they ship orders? It’s never worked for me to just order one thing – I always have to get it up to $10 it seems like and I am a VIP.
Erin
I hadn’t realized this; I guess I always have that! I’m checking on this now! Thank you!
Robyn
I have been a Grove shopper for a little over a year now. It started with just diapers because I needed diapers for my sensitive skinned newborn and none of the local stores carry reasonably priced chemical free diapers. I got the VIP membership and slowly started discovering what else they carried and now I usually try at least one new product a month. Thanks for the link to the free sponge, I have been wanting to try those but haven’t gotten to it yet. I agree with all of your pros and cons. One thing I didn’t know that VIP members got free gifts until I read it somewhere recently and I have to say I only got 1 free gift, a chapstick like my 3rd or 4th month in. I got a hand sanitizer last month but that was I had to spend at least 59$ to get it free, which probably wasn’t really free since I had to order a few extras to get there. So I’m wondering where do we find out about these freebies is there something I’m missing? I don’t get to all my emails but I know I never saw the sponges were a freebie anywhere until your blog. I emailed them about the freebies and the response was that everyone got the same freebies….well I am wondering how I am missing these freebies?
Erin
Hi Robyn! That is interesting! Do you get emails from your VIP “person”? I get emails with my VIP offers. I have to click to “claim” them. I would email your VIP rep and ask where your freebies are! My most recent one was another glass spray bottle!
Grove Collaborative
Hi Robyn, I am so sorry about that! We send VIP gifts through email so please check your inbox for those emails. If you email us at [email protected] we can help you out with this immediately.
Allison
Not a fan. I’ve been trying them for about 6 months, and I’ve been really disappointed. I live in Texas, and their shipments take a FULL WEEK to arrive after their “Your shipment is on the way!” email. I always end up running to the store to get one of the products I’m waiting on. And I think their customer service is terrible. They once wanted to send me a freebie of one of their walnut sponges (which is nice, sure) but since my daughter has an anaphylactic allergy to walnut, I asked them to not include that item that I did not order or request. They sent it anyway. Another time I sent them an email and text to check the status of my order (it had been 10 days, and had not yet arrived), and Christina sent an auto reply message twice, but never responded. This time they sent me the wrong item, and I’m expected to wait 2-5 business days for a response. Meanwhile I now have to run to the store AGAIN, this time to get fabric softener since they failed to include it in my order. Their packaging is cute, and I really wanted this site to work out, but sadly this isn’t the convenient shopping experience I’d hoped it would be. No longer a customer.
Grove Collaborative
Hi Allison, I am so sorry for any frustration! Please email us at [email protected] and we can sort this all out for you. We would love to make this right 🙂
Kathleen Campanelli
I have to agree with Allison. I call and never get through. I’ve emailed many times but I just receive a “generic” response. I haven’t received my order and wanted an update. I still have no response.
I did not know that I would have the VIP auto delivery. I really don’t want it or need it. Again I email to cancel but I get no response. I’m very disappointed and frustrated. I don’t want to be charged for something I do not need or want. The customer service is worse than terrible. It’s non existent.
Karla
I agree, worst customer service. They act like they care by replying to your email right away with a generic reply. I returned items I did not ordered. They has been three weeks and I have not gotten a refund. I emailed and text, they respond “I’ll take care of it right away”. Nothing happens. As soon as I get my refund I’m cancelling them. If you think they are the best, try sending something back, you will change your mind
Erin
I am going to email Grove on your behalf, Karla. I hope you get the refund!
Olivia Grove
We’re so sorry to hear you guys are having trouble getting a hold of us, would you both send an email to [email protected] and make the subject line ‘Attn: Olivia’ and I’ll make sure to help you guys out!
Ahore
Yes same for me, unauthorized charge for VIP, can’t get through, numerous calls and emails to them..very dissatisfied, I am glad there are more people coming forward, this company is truly getting sugar coated, but if people speak up , the company can look at this to improve their service and make it RIGHT, that’s all I want, as I had hopes that this was a trustworthy company…I believe in the future, a company that has integrity, respect for its employees and its customers, will be a SUCCESSFUL company. That’s where I will dedicate my purchases to.
Erin
I’m so sorry you’ve had such a bad experience. I have asked the company to please help out those who have had a bad experience. Mine has been good.
Jennifer Ambrose
Not happy with Grove either. I thought it was a good deal at first until this month when I got an email saying, “Your order is on the way!!” and I had never gotten a reminder email. Not only that but they added a bunch of stuff to my cart that I had ordered in the past and the total was $60!!!
Customer service did nothing for me except to remind me that it is a subscription service. Ugh, shady.
Cancelled and will never be back! If you do sign up for this make sure to check your cart frequently so they don’t add a bunch of stuff and then forget to send you a reminder email.
Not happy….
Erin
Oh no, Jennifer!! Do you mind if I email them on your behalf? I would NOT be happy!! That is not cool at all! I’m so sorry you had a bad experience. I always get an email before they ship my orders. I would be very unhappy if I paid for things I didn’t want. I am happy to email them on your behalf.
Grove Collaborative
Hi Jennifer, I am sorry for any confusion. It does look like we were able to take care of this for you. If you need anything else please feel free to email us at [email protected]
Kathleen Campanelli
I have to agree with Jennifer. I have never dealt with a company like this before. No customer service at all. All I want is the status of my order and to cancel my VIP auto delivery which I didn’t even know I had. I think this is shady. I unsubscribed. I hope that helps but they probably won’t do that either.
Very frustrated and angry
Marilou S.
I have had the problem where they say I get a free item and it shows up with a price tag…then I check my cart when they send the reminder that it will be shipping soon…everything is what I want. Then I get my email saying it is on the way, but they didn’t include the free item. Told them and they said that it is in the cart now for next month…so I have to buy another month’s worth of stuff to get my free item. They also sent a wrong item. Very frustrating. I am spending more time trying to get my orders straight than I would be going to multiple stores. Waited 3 days to get a response back on my first email…second one has not been answered and now I have a third one since they sent the wrong item. UGH!!
Erin
Oh no!! Do you mind if I email them on your behalf as well? That is NOT cool, and I wouldn’t be happy either!!
Iveta Braunova
Exactly, they made me spend $39 in items, half I don’t even need for free item (antibacterial spray), WITCH THEY DID NOT INCLUDED!! Shame on this company…
Erin
I’m so sorry you had that experience. 🙁 Did you email customer service?
Grove Collaborative
Hi Iveta, I am sorry for any frustration! It looks like you were able to get ahold of us at [email protected] in May.
We are sending you a hand sanitizer spray and another gift immediately 🙂
Kathleen Campanelli
I wish someone at Grove would help me. All I do is email and call. Can’t get through on the phone and I get mostly generic emails. I think they are a shady business
Grove Collaborative
Hi Marilou, I am so sorry for any frustration! Please email us at [email protected] so we can look into this and take care of this issue immediately.
Susan
Just signed up and hope I really like it!
Ann
Ordered last week Friday and my credit card was charged (most other online retailers charge at shipping). Received an email on Monday apologizing for the delay in shipping but will likely go out tomorrow (all !!!). It’s Thursday evening and still haven’t received a shipping confirmation. E-mailed this evening. Started wondering if this was a scam, but I trust your blog so I’ll wait a few more days before contacting my credit company.
Erin
Oh no! I am going to email them about all of these complaints. 🙁 I usually get email confirmations. When you log into your account, do you see where you have order confirmation? My most recent order arrived yesterday.
Grove Collaborative
Hi Ann, I am so sorry for any frustration! You should have received a response from us. Did you email us at [email protected]? Please send us an email and we can look into this for you as soon as possible.
Kathleen Campanelli
I call and email all the time. Can’t get through on phone. Message says to call back. I call all day. No response to emails. Only generic ones
Brenda
Same thing has happened to myself. I was so excited now I’m just kinda bummed. Had to go to the store to purchase some of the items I’ve been waiting on. Same deal with the emails and texts. Received automated responses but nothing further. Finally called and they said to expect it in another 2-3 days. My orders was pd for on 6-22-17 and still no order. Free item in next shipment but I will not be placing another order so so much for that. Disappointed ?
Kathleen Campanelli
At least you got through when you called.
Patricia Hess
Add me to the list of disappointed customers. It takes days to get a response from Customer Service; I placed an order on June 26 that is still sitting in limbo after getting an email saying it was delayed (no reason given) and would ship in the next two days (this was the middle of last week). It is now July 3, my credit card was charged on June 26, and still no shipment or shipment information. I have sent several emails and would just like an honest explanation of what is going on. I don’t want more “freebies”, I want the items I ordered!
Patricia Hess
Just coincidentally I got a shipping notice several hours after leaving this comment. Hopefully whatever the problem has been is now resolved.
Annette McKay
I made the risk of ordering from this company. I was charged 6/30. I have gotten a confirmation of my order but no processing or shipping still. I have gotten emails from 4 different people saying they are my rep. Then another one saying I’m suddenly now signed up for VIP which I never did. Then to boot I have emailed them multiple times for a status and they tell me I don’t exist. Buyer beware this must be some kind of scam. I have to go cancel my credit card now.
Kathleen Campanelli
I have the same exact problem. I will probably have to cancel my credit card also. There must be a way to report this scam
Elsie
Grove Co. is not a scam. I think they’ve been recently experiencing a tremendous amount of growth as a company, and they’re having some growing pains at the moment. I bet that as they bring on more staff and smooth out their systems things will be back up to their high standards! I agree with the pros and cons that Erin mentioned in this post–I’m not a fan of the way they add items to your cart for you, but maybe that is a feature they will change as they hear feedback from us customers!
Erin
Thanks so much for this feedback, Elsie! I agree! I got an email from Samantha, one of the leaders in the company, and she told me the shipping delays were because they had just transferred to a new shipping system.
Jackie
I wish I had looked up reviews like this before ordering. Waiting almost 2 weeks (June 29 order will be delivered July 11) for delivery is too long. I will not order again, especially for household products that can be purchased in a store.
Cindy
I am so glad I decided to search for Grove Collaborative reviews before logging a credit card and placing my order! To be honest, it all just seemed to good to be true. The first problem was that they offer a free Meyer’s set of stuff (on a link from another site) but don’t tell you until you give your e-mail address that you have to purchase $20 worth of products before you actually get the ‘free’ stuff. Granted, the free stuff is A LOT and is full size – Meyer’s dish soap, hand wash, hand lotion and some walnut scrubs – so I was OK with the mandatory $20 purchase. When I went to check out I noticed 5 or 6 things added to my cart. Normally, I hardly pay attention to what I order (because, come on, everyone knows what items they clicked) but since this was the first time I looked over my order. I didn’t even understand why the extra products were added NOR was there any explanation. They could just write something like ‘Based on your order we recommend the following items.’ but they don’t do that. It’s there like you ordered it yourself. This is shady and based on so many of the reviews here I’m canceling everything right now. If it looks too good to be true, it probably is. Words to live by.
Erin
I’m sorry you had such a bad experience. It hasn’t been like that for me at all.
Karla
Try returning something and see what happens. You will be disappointed.
Erin
I’m so sorry you’ve had a bad experience. 🙁 I have spoken to Grove about this issue.
Dory Piper
I cannot disagree more! I believe all these positive reviews are staged. This is the most horrible company I’ve ever dealt with. I placed an order maybe 10 days ago. I never even received a confirmation email from them. I tried calling many times and got a spunky sugar sweet voicemail saying to call back during business hours. It WAS during their business hours. Days after placing my order I finally got a lame email saying they’re so sorry my order hadn’t gone out but it I’ll likely go out “tomorrow “. Another lie. I emailed them and got no response. I called back today during their business hours, got spunky back on the voicemail. I texted and got another Bullshit auto response requesting my email. But still no order received. I believe they are theives and the operation is a scam.
Erin
I’m so sorry for your experience, Dory. It’s not a scam. I have had a wonderful experience with them. It does take longer for shipping than somewhere like Amazon prime. This review is completely honest. I told what I like and what I don’t.
Hilary
This is so odd. They’re so prompt with my emails. I think we might have found some growing pains and a few bad experiences.
However, if you’re reading this I say give it a go. With their amazing initial offer, you really can’t go wrong! 🙂 I want to curl up with their dishtowels, and I think my husband might love Method Toilet cleaner more than me (never would’ve found that without Grove).
Jen
I also had a negative experience this month. This is my second month, and I was excited to order again after the fast turnaround and shipping of my first order. I went into my account and noticed that they delivery date for my normal shipment date would coincide with me being out of town, so I moved the shipment up a week. However, the order has taken a week to ship and will unfortunately arrive while I’m gone. I received no email about their warehouse issues until I emailed them. Their reply was a system upgrade took longer than expected and “we’re experiencing growing pains.” That’s it.
So I’m not sure of I’ll continue to order, I could’ve picked most of these items up for a comparable price when I went grocery shopping. I also feel bad for those I referred and hope they don’t have similar issues.
I don’t think it’s a scam, I was really excited after my first order and from Facebook posts on their page I’m not the only one. However, a good business model includes consistency and sustainability. What’s going to happen when they grow more?
bridget
I’ve been a VIP member with Grove for almost one year and have had great customer service. When items are automatically added to my cart, I simply remove them; it’s simple and easy to do. My rep always emails and texts me several days prior to my order being processed, so I’m well aware of the upcoming purchase. I’ve received several freebies and have switched our household over to much healthier products. I have actually been able to spend less on cleaning products because they’re concentrated and work way better than conventional brands I used for years. I plan to stay, even with the small orders I make 🙂
Chantal
I placed my order July 7 and was informed it would take 5 business days for my order to go out. Hopefully I get my order soon. I understand they may be experiencing growing pains but it is a bit frustrating to not get my items sooner. A lot of these items can be found at Publix and other stores in my area. I hope to be able to post something positive soon. So far I am not very impressed. Thank you for your blog post!
Virginia Joplin
On May 9, my card was charged $19.99 by Grove epantry. When I inquired, Grove said they had auto-subscribed me to a monthly shipment of soap. This subscription was never announced when I had placed a prior one-time order. Since the package had not yet shipped, Grove said they would refund the fee.
Within a few days, I logged back into the Grove site and canceled all future shipments/subscriptions. And yet, Grove charged my card again on June 22 for $33.40 and sent me a box. I contacted Grove before the box even arrived and requested an RMA slip. When the box arrived, I attached the RMA and return-shipped the unopened box via UPS on July 5th.
I have not received a refund for either of these amounts. The total in dispute is $53.39. Now I’m having to file a dispute claim with my bank to recoup unauthorized charges for items I never received.
Will O
WOW. I am so sorry to hear this, Virginia! Would you like for me to contact Grove on your behalf? I would be upset too. 🙁 I’ve never had anything like that happen with my orders.
Olivia Grove
Hey Virginia! Looks like one of our Grove Guides was able to take care of this issue for you, we’re so sorry for the delay and frustration!
Kimberly
I have only order twice, but I am pleased. I get reminders and shopping for the items I want and use is a breeze. I have received lays of freebies. I am not sure if I will continue once my VIP membership is up, but if they continue with the perks I will likely continue. It does take a while for my order to ship after I order and a while to receive, but I don’t mind that at all.
Erin
I agree that shipping takes longer than at other places. I’m so glad you’re liking the VIP too!!
Jennie Turton Miculit
I am beyond impressed with the team at Grove! I have not experienced such great customer service in a looooong time! I called in multiple times in one month to get info on my order. Every time I was met with quick responses, awesome attitudes and genuine care and concern. I LOVE my products, and I love interacting with this company! Wow! Keep up the tremendous work!
Erin
I have felt the same. I am shocked at the experience the others who have commented here have had!
Christine
I am pulling my hair out over this company. I have never in my life had such a frustrating experience. I placed my first order. I then signed in to see when it would be delivered, and was horrified to see that they had charged me almost DOUBLE what I had authorized on my credit card. And to boot, almost my entire order was wrong.
The worst part is that I have been anxiously trying to contact them to get this resolved for two days and have been ignored. I’ve probably spent hours trying to reach these people. All I have received for my trouble are automated text messages and emails. I call during business hours and their phone line goes to a recording after you wait for a few minutes and tells you to call back. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. It’s awful. I am so frustrated and worried that I’ve been ripped off. I filed a dispute with my credit card company.
PLEASE DO NOT ORDER FROM THIS HORRIBLE COMPANY. I honestly believe this must be a scam. I do not have very much money and this has been an incredible source of anxiety for me. Save yourself the grief and go literally anywhere else.
Erin
I’m so sorry you’ve had this awful experience! I am going to notify them of this immediately.
Laura
Yes, to pretty much ALL of the above responses! There have been some real positives in ordering through Grove but several negatives as well. I’ve currently got a love/hate relationship with this company. I’m REALLY hoping that they work out their shipping if they want to stay in line with or outshine their competition. It takes FOREVER to receive a shipment from this company. That’s definitely my biggest complaint. This may have sufficed several years ago but customers have now come to expect much faster shipping. Like others have already mentioned the shipping takes SO long that I end up just running to the store and getting the item from there. I hope they get their shipping figured out or I have a feeling they will be losing a lot of customers. I ordered Mrs. Meyer’s products from Amazon at the same price (actually a bit cheaper) and it was at my doorstep in 3 days.
Erin
I agree that the shipping time is one of their biggest downfalls.
