I’ll just go ahead and say it: I’m not a natural at thinking of gift ideas. I hem and haw and suffer from decision fatigue.
Especially when it comes to gift ideas for grandmothers (aka for my mother or my mother-in-law), I’ve found it very difficult to know what to get.
For much of my life, I’ve ended up purchasing something last minute, never knowing if my loved ones would even like the gifts I chose.
But my husband is the opposite. He will spend time dreaming, planning, researching, and thinking of the perfect gift ideas for those on his list. He has written many of the popular gift guides for my website because he’s just that good at picking out gifts for others.
I’ve learned a lot from him during our marriage, and one of the things I appreciate learning from him the most is how to give good gifts.
When it comes to buying gifts for people, no one has stumped me more than my parents. My parents don’t have hobbies, and they seem to have, well, everything they could ever want or need already.
But, thanks to my husband, I’ve come up with a list of Mother’s Day gift ideas for grandmas who are hard to buy for. These are gifts we’ve given to both of our moms over the years that have truly been hits.
You can’t go wrong when buying Mother’s Day gifts for grandmothers if you stick to the suggestions in this post. I hope this post gives you inspiration for choosing the best gift for your loved one this year!

1. Houseplants make great grandma gifts.
If the grandmother in your life has a green thumb, a new houseplant may be just the type of gift that would make her day.
Even for those not especially savvy with gardening, there are lots of houseplants that just about anyone can keep from dying!
Not only do houseplants cheer up living spaces, but they are also an excellent way to clean up indoor air quality.
While I always recommend shopping at a local nursery first, if you’re pressed for time, you can even get a houseplant delivered from Amazon!
Some of the houseplants that I think would make excellent Mother’s Day gifts for grandmothers include:
- 12-pack of Easy-to-Grow Houseplants: If you think she will want houseplants for her entire home, this is an easy way to give her several plants for each room. And the best thing is that these plants are easy to grow and maintain!
- Hanging Succulent: These easy-to-maintain hanging succulents come fully rooted and ready to hang!
- Orchid and Succulent Combo: This combo plant includes a beautiful, easy-to-maintain orchid with a succulent. I love how orchids come in a variety of colors. Choose her favorite color as a starting point for this type of grandma gift.
Alternatively, consider gifting her a bouquet of fresh blooms. This gift won’t last as long, but I can guarantee you a vase of pink roses or whatever her favorite flower may be will brighten your grandma’s home and be a special gift she will enjoy.

2. Gift cards are a great gift idea for grandmothers.
Gift cards are a versatile option that allows grandmothers to choose exactly what they want.
Consider gift cards to:
- Their Favorite Stores: Whether it’s a clothing store, a home goods store, or bookshop, a gift card gives them the freedom to pick out something they love. My mother-in-law appreciates when we give her gift cards to Lowes, so she can have a little help funding projects around her yard and garden.
- Restaurants or Cafes: Treat them to a meal out with friends or a cozy coffee date. Some grandmas are even huge Starbucks fans and would love gift cards from there for coffee-on-the-go!
- Online Retailers: Give them access to a world of shopping possibilities with Amazon or Target or Walmart gift cards.
- Movie Tickets: If the grandmother in your life loves going to the movies, this could be a really fun gift for her. Whether your local theater is AMC, Fandango, Regal, Cinemark, or Amstar, you can find gift cards for movie tickets online. Note: If you’re sending this to a grandmother who doesn’t live near you, make sure you purchase a gift card that will work with your beloved grandmother’s local theater. I also love the idea of adding some popcorn, drinks, and candy to a movie-themed basket, like this blogger recommends.
- Beauty Services: This one is probably my favorite because I personally enjoy gifts like this versus “things” that can clutter up my home. If the grandma in your life enjoys getting her nails and hair done, facials, massages, etc., then a gift card to her favorite salon or spa will likely make her Mother’s Day!

3. Snack baskets will make your grandmother feel loved–especially if it includes her favorite snacks.
Most grandmothers have spent decades of their lives putting together gifts and treats for others. What about a fun snack basket for her? This is a thoughtful gift with lots of great options depending on her tastes and dietary preferences.
In a snack basket for a grandma, consider including:
-
- Chocolate and Candy: Chocolate cravings don’t disappear even after menopause. Believe me: Grandma isn’t too old for chocolate! If she’s watching her sugar intake, consider one of my faves–Lily’s sugar-free chocolate bars.
- Healthy Snacks: Balance out the sweet treats with some healthier options like dried fruit, nuts, granola bars, or popcorn.
- Salty Snacks: Don’t forget the savory snacks! Chips, pretzels, and popcorn make for delicious munchies during movie nights or while she’s reading her favorite novel.
- Unique Sodas: Surprise your favorite grandmother with unique and exotic soda flavors that she may not have tried before, such as craft sodas or imported beverages. Our family’s personal decision is to avoid sugary sodas. If your mother or grandmother is the same, she may enjoy Zevia and the sugar-free, prebiotic Poppi Sodas.
- Fresh-baked cookies: If you love to bake, adding your own baked goods will add a personal touch to a snack basket for your grandma.
4. Self-care kits make great grandma gifts.
Again, mothers and grandmothers spend decades of their lives taking care of others. A self-care kit may be just what they need to encourage them to take care of themselves as well! A self-care kit can be a thoughtful and practical Mother’s Day gift set for grandmothers.
The following make perfect items for a self-care kit for grandmas:
- Skincare Products: Cleaners, moisturizers, face masks, and lip balms can help them take care of their skin and feel pampered. I especially recommend the Countertime skincare line from Beautycounter for aging skin (it’s what I use now, in my 40s!). This line includes hyaluronic acid, which is a popular ingredient for aging skin.
- Bath and Body Products: Treat them to luxurious bath bombs (you can even make your own!), shower gels, body lotions, and scrubs for a spa-like experience at home.
- Candles: Create a relaxing atmosphere with scented candles that help them unwind and de-stress after a long day. I especially recommend non-toxic candles (like this one).
- Essential Oils: A set of essential oils and a diffuser can help grandmothers create a calming and refreshing environment in their homes. They can mix and match oils to create their own signature blends. (We even gave a set of essential oils and a diffuser to my father-in-law for Christmas one year, and he actually loved it!) 5. Books or magazine make great gifts for grandmothers.
My husband’s grandmother (the only one of our eight grandparents still living) loves to read, so our recent go-to for her has been to send her Christian romance novels or crossword puzzle books. Both reading and doing interactive crossword puzzle books can keep the mind sharp.
Note: Depending on their age and eyesight, you may want to opt for large-print versions when purchasing books and magazines for grandmothers.
Some of my top suggestions for books for grandmothers include:
- Bestselling Novels in Their Favorite Genre: Perhaps a work of historical fiction from the time period of their youth will induce a sense of nostalgia. If they’re like my grandmother-in-law and enjoy romance, I recommend the Christian romance novels from Karen Kingsbury and Robin Jones Gunn. Or, choose classic literature that aligns with their interests and preferences. Alternatively, you can gift her a beautiful edition of her all-time favorite book.
- Word Search or Crossword Puzzle Books: If they are seeking to keep their minds sharp, consider giving word search or crossword puzzle books.
- Magazine Subscriptions: Subscribe them to magazines covering topics they’re passionate about, whether it’s fashion, sports, music, or technology.
- Blank Book or Journal: Does your grandma enjoy journaling? Consider gifting her with a beautiful new journal, where she can record favorite memories for future generations. Be sure to include a sweet message from you in the front of the book!
- Homemade Cookbook: Have you spent a lot of time in grandma’s kitchen and collected her recipes over the years? An excellent present for her may be a handmade book of family recipes. Or, if you don’t have time for this, you could highlight her favorite recipe by framing it to display on her dining room wall.
No matter what type of book you choose, don’t forget to include a special message to your grandmother inside the front cover!

6. Household help makes for a great gift for grandmothers.
I love this Mother’s Day gift idea for grandmas! Lending a helping hand at grandma’s house may be the only gift she wants.
Some gift ideas that fit into the household help category include:
- Housecleaning: This would probably be my top pick! Of course, you need to make sure the grandmother in your life feels comfortable with someone else coming into her home to clean. (Some don’t.) If it’s not in your budget to pay to get the entire home cleaned, you could always pay to clean the area of her choice–like the bathrooms or kitchen. If it’s in your budget to pay for a monthly clean for the entire year, you can do that too! Alternatively, you can give her a homemade coupon to do the house cleaning yourself!
- Decluttering: This is where only you know the grandmother in your life the best. If she’s a hoarder and doesn’t realize it–or is embarrassed by it–then you may not want to get her this as a gift. I don’t want to suggest any gift ideas that may hurt someone’s feelings! But if she is constantly complaining of being overwhelmed with clutter and wishing she could hire someone to help, then consider splurging on hiring a professional home organizer. Or, you can always make a homemade coupon to show her you’re willing to come and help her declutter yourself.
- Laundry Service: Sure, she may be in a season of life where she is only washing clothes for one or two, or maybe she even has a simple laundry system she loves. But perhaps taking this off her hands will free her up to focus on other hobbies she enjoys. Search for laundering services in your local community. Many will come pick up laundry from the front porch and bring it back washed, dried, and folded for you the next day!
- Window Washing: I don’t know about you, but I don’t wash my windows as part of my everyday cleaning. If the grandmother in your life needs her windows and/or blinds cleaned, she may appreciate you gifting her with a professional window and/or blind cleaning service–or with you doing it for her yourself.
- Professional Carpet and/or Tile Cleaning: My floors are mainly carpeted, so my husband and I get our carpets professionally cleaned at least once per year. If your grandmother has a lot of rugs or carpets in her home, this may be the perfect gift for her. Or, you can pay to get whatever type of flooring she has professionally deep cleaned.
- Robot Vacuum: This one is my favorite. It’s a gift we’ve given to two grandmothers, my mom and mother-in-law. A robotic vacuum cleaner is truly the gift that keeps on giving. I think it’s probably one of the best gifts we’ve ever given my mom. She used it so much that it eventually wore out, and we replaced it with another one. I have one of these myself, and it’s truly one of the best Mother’s Day gifts you can give!

7. Fashion accessories make great gifts for fashionista grandmothers.
Help the grandmother in your life express her personal style with some fashionable accessories this Mother’s Day. My mother-in-law loves fashion, so I’ve enjoyed giving her fun jewelry or a nice scarf in the past.
You’ll want to spend some time observing your mom or grandma’s personal style before splurging on this type of Mother’s Day gift.
- Jewelry: Delight her with a piece of jewelry, like earrings, necklaces, bracelets, or rings that complement her style. Be sure to check with her or someone else who would know to verify if she has any metal allergies. Sterling silver is a good option that is allergy-free for most.
- Scarves and Hats: Keep her cozy and stylish with fashionable scarves, beanies, or a baseball cap just for grandma.
- Sunglasses: Protect her eyes in style with a trendy pair of sunglasses that she’ll love to wear all year round.

8. Personalized gifts are perfect for Mother’s Day.
Make your mother or grandmother’s Mother’s Day gift extra special with personalized items that show you’ve put thought and effort into her gift. This category gives a personalized touch that the other gifts in this list may lack. Consider:
- Monogrammed Gifts: Add a personal touch with monogrammed items like a pajama set, tote bag or travel jewelry box. You can splurge a little more and purchase a personalized gift in grandma’s name.
- Accessories just for Grandma: She’d love something that is just for her: tumbler, jewelry, or a keychain.
- Photo Gifts: Capture family photos in gifts like a digital frame, customizable photo frame, special grandma picture frame, or personalized calendar featuring her favorite photos.
- Pretty Mug: Choose a mug with her favorite Scripture verse or an inspirational quote. She will think of you every time she uses the mug for her morning coffee!

9. Yard help is a unique yet needed gift for many grandmothers.
Similar to household help, the grandmother in your life may need help with maintaining her yard. This may especially be true if she is in poor health. Hiring someone to help her with her yard (or doing it yourself) is a great way to show your grandmother love.
Consider the following Mother’s Day gifts that fit within the realm of yard help:
- Lawn Mowing/Service: Whether you choose to mow her lawn yourself or pay for a lawn-keeping service, this is a gift the grandmother in your life is sure to appreciate.
- Weeding: Perhaps you’re not able to pay for her entire lawn care, but you can afford to pay for someone to come and do some spring weeding. Every little bit of help counts!
- Pressure Washing: My husband and I have to get our home pressure washed at least once every two years (and sometimes more often!). If you’ve noticed mold, mildew, etc. building on the outside areas of her home, paying for someone to pressure wash her house would be a great gift to the grandmother in your life.
Alternatively, consider purchasing her something for her yard. My mother and sister both enjoy bird watching, so my sister gifted our mother a bird feeder for Mother’s Day a few years ago. She loved it!

10. Grandmothers appreciate services to make their lives easier.
In the same vein as household help and yard help, consider gifting your grandmother a service to make her life easier. I appreciate these as a busy mom, but they can also help alleviate stress and create more time for older women.
Consider the following services that can make your grandmother’s life easier:
- Instacart: Considering purchasing her an Instarcart+ membership, so she has grocery delivery without extra fees.
- Walmart+: My family uses this to get our Walmart groceries delivered, and it’s even more affordable than Instacart. We love it!
Conclusion
Whether you’re looking to buy a Mother’s Day gift for your mother or grandma, I hope this list of Mother’s Day gift ideas for grandmothers has jogged your creativity and helped you come up with the perfect gift for your loved one. Don’t forget to include a Mother’s Day card with your gifts as well!
Remember, it’s not just about the gifts; it’s about showing them how much you care. So, get creative, have fun, and make this Mother’s Day a special day to remember.
